ASDAN’s Leadership Short Course offers exciting and rewarding activities to develop skills and knowledge through taking on a leadership role or responsibilities. This course helps learners develop their leadership skills, as well as personal, social and work-related skills.

The Leadership Short Course will enable learners to:

  • learn about themselves and leadership, and develop an understanding of what type of leader they could be
  • learn and demonstrate the skills and techniques needed to be a leader
  • reflect and gain an understanding of their performance as a leader and support others as they learn about leadership

Short Courses can be completed using the student book or are available for learners to complete online through the ASDAN e-portfolio system. Learners log in to complete challenges, record skills development and upload evidence. Tutors can view learner progress and sign off work, leaving feedback as needed.

Who is it for?

The Leadership Short Course can be undertaken by young people of all abilities, mainly aged between 13 and 19 (as well as adults and younger learners, where appropriate). 

It is ideal for students who are interested in developing and demonstrating the skills and qualities required to be an effective leader. It can be used to develop leadership skills in a wide range of contexts, including sports and interest groups and educational leadership roles (eg prefects).

Course content

The Leadership Short Course contains four modules:

  • Develop leadership skills
  • Be a leader
  • Review your leadership
  • Support new leaders

The Leadership Short Course accredits between 10–60 hours of activities. It is available in student book and e-portfolio format. Tutors should choose the most appropriate option for their situation. Each learner will need their own copy of the Short Course student book or an e-portfolio login – this contains the challenge content.

Learners must present evidence of their activities in an organised portfolio or e-portfolio.

This will contain:

  • a record of challenges completed, with supporting evidence for each challenge
  • recording documents, showing how learners have planned and reviewed their activities
  • summary of achievement, highlighting skills development
  • personal statement


Short Courses can count as up to nine of the credits needed to achieve the International Award Programmes.

Getting started

If you are not yet registered with ASDAN, your first step is to complete an Application for Centre Registration Form. See the Join section for more information. Current ASDAN centres need to ensure that the programme is added to their centre's registration.

Following registration, you will be able to purchase your books and access additional resources and guidance via the members area of ASDAN also provides introductory workshops and can arrange in-house training.

ASDAN members area

Once your centre is registered with ASDAN for Short Courses, you can find further information and resources in the members area. This section of the website contains all the essential documents, forms and updates that you will need to deliver your course.

There is no limit to the number of staff from registered centres who can have access to the members area. New user accounts can be created using the online form.


Once students' work has been internally moderated, centres can request certificates for successful candidates from ASDAN, using the form in the members area.

There is no external moderation for this programme, although ASDAN reserves the right to request samples of candidates' work for quality assurance purposes.
