ASDAN’s Accelerating Progress courses in English and mathematics have been designed to support students in the new, tougher GCSEs in England. They have a special focus on helping learners gain a four or a five.
The programmes have been written by practising subject specialists with experience in helping learners make good progress and realise their full potential.
The programmes have been designed to support learners in Years 10 and 11 in England.
They can also be used to support post-16 students undertaking GCSE resits in English and mathematics.
Through Accelerating Progress programmes, students complete engaging challenges, collect evidence of their work and identify skills development.
The English programme will challenge students to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills. This will support learners in formulating and expressing their own opinions – one of the key requirements of the new GCSE.
The challenges in the mathematics programme have a contextual approach, applying subject material to day-to-day events. This reflects the greater emphasis in the mathematics GCSE on applying new skills and knowledge to real-life problems and situations.
A science programme is currently in development to support learners taking the combined science GCSE. This programme is due for release in 2018.
Each learner will require their own registration to access the Accelerating Progress e-portfolio system. This allows learners to input their completed challenges and upload their evidence for tutors to sign off online.
Learner registrations can be purchased from ASDAN, with bulk discounts available:
The e-portfolio system also includes resources to support learners as they complete their challenges.
A demo of the e-portfolio system is available for centres that wish to view the course content before registering their learners:
Tutor support manuals are available for the English and mathematics courses. These resources have been designed to support experienced practitioners as well as non-specialists in delivering the courses.
The manuals include detailed tutor notes for each challenge and information on subject-specific skills development. Print copies of the manuals include an electronic version.
Following registration, you will be able to purchase e-portfolio logins and access additional resources and guidance via the members area of this website.
Once your centre is registered with ASDAN for Accelerating Progress, you can find further information and resources in the members area. This section of the website contains all the essential documents, forms and updates that you need to deliver your course.
There is no limit to the number of people from a centre who can register to use the members area. You can create a new user account using the online form.
Once students' work has been internally moderated, centres can request certificates for successful candidates from ASDAN.
There is no external moderation for this programme, although ASDAN reserves the right to request samples of candidates' work for quality assurance purposes.
